13 July 1949: Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery of Alamein visited Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School for Boys. Curiously, he received no official welcome from the Borough Council on his visit. While at QEGS, he inscribed and formally deposited in the School Library, the service record book of Old Elizabethans, many of whom fought under his leadership.
